Agoraphobe, Stephen Turnbull vit cloîtré dans son appartement depuis des mois. Il passe le plus clair de son temps devant la télé, surtout lorsque sont programmés des documentaires sur la nature, mange les mêmes plats végétariens à chaque repas et collectionne des objets particulièrement inutiles comme ces pailles qu’il range méticuleusement dans des boîtes qui s’amoncellent dans son salon. Il se souvient du voyage en Europe qu’il fit avec son meilleur ami, Bunny. Les deux compères avaient croisé la route d’Eloisa, une ravissante autostoppeuse espagnole. Stephen, introverti, avait été charmé par la jeune femme, que Bunny avait aussitôt séduite…
